What Is Changing in the PSLE Maths 2026 Exam Format?

According to the revised 2026 PSLE Mathematics examination format from SEAB, marks and time are rebalanced between Paper 1 and Paper 2:

Paper 1 consists of two booklets:

• Booklet A: 10 MCQ questions (1 mark each) + 8 MCQ questions (2 marks each) = 26 marks

• Booklet B: 12 short-answer questions (2 marks each) = 24 marks

Paper 2 consists of one booklet:

• 5 short-answer questions (2 marks each) = 10 marks

• 10 structured/long-answer questions (3, 4 or 5 marks each) = 40 marks

Both papers are scheduled on the same day with a break between them.

 

Why the 2026 PSLE Maths Format Matters

The numbers may look like a minor adjustment, but the revised format makes Paper 1 just as important as Paper 2. With 50 marks available in each paper, students need to be accurate and deliberate even when working without a calculator.

Paper 1 can no longer be treated as the "easier" paper to rush through. Questions may still involve straightforward computation, but careful reading, number sense and precise interpretation can make the difference between gaining and losing marks.

Under the 2026 format, any unit required in an answer is provided, and students must give their answer in that unit. This makes unit conversion and answer sense-checking especially important.

 

What PSLE Maths Questions Actually Test

These examples show why success in PSLE Maths depends on more than calculation. Students need to extract the right information, notice conditions and choose an appropriate method before they begin working.

Joe printed some copies of a poster and paid $104 altogether. What was the largest possible number of copies that Joe got?

This 2-mark question can trip students up not because the arithmetic is difficult, but because they have to interpret three conditions correctly:

• Treating all copies at the same price, ignoring that the first copy costs $5

• Misapplying the $3 rate to the wrong number of copies

• Forgetting to add the 2 free copies when 30 or more are printed

The students who get this right aren't necessarily the fastest calculators. They're the most careful readers.

Example 2: The Average Question (PSLE 2025, Paper 2 Q4b)

A set of numbers: 2, 3, 3, 3, 5, 4, 1, 3, 0, 3. One number is removed. The average of the remaining numbers is greater than before. Which number could have been removed? Give all possible answers.

A calculator doesn't help here unless students understand the underlying concept: removing a number smaller than the average raises the average of the remaining set. This is mathematical reasoning, and it is the kind of thinking students need to apply confidently in the revised format.

A Classic Example That Still Holds: The Ribbon Question (PSLE 2017, Paper 2 Q10)

Jess needs 200 pieces of ribbon, each 110 cm long, to decorate for a party. Ribbon is sold in rolls of 25 m each. What is the least number of rolls she needs to buy?

The arithmetic is straightforward. The challenge is in the setup: do you calculate the total ribbon length needed first, or figure out how many pieces fit in each roll? Students who pay attention to detail and focus on reasoning are more likely to secure the marks.
