Building Impressive English Compositions

For a composition to leave an indelible mark on readers' minds, writers need to employ effective writing techniques to keep readers at the edge of their seat. In our English programmes, our structured approach to characterisation and building suspense in a story's climax helps young writers to bring their story to life.

Early Years

Nursery 2 – Kindergarten 2

In addition to building a foundation for word recognition, vocabulary and sentence structure when it comes to writing, our early years programmes also inculcate fundamental skills in reading and speaking.

Primary

Primary 1 – Primary 6

At the primary levels, we introduce students to the story curve and teach them how to structure their ideas so there is a smooth flow to the composition. We then arm them with an array of techniques to bring their characters and story to life.

Secondary & Junior College

Secondary 1 – Junior College 2

Our secondary to junior college programmes help students further develop their writing, speaking, comprehension and listening skills, enhancing their overall language appreciation and mastery.

Common Challenges in Composition Writing

In our lessons, students first learn about the story curve and how each part of a story must link to the development of the plot and its characters.

Our teachers give students ample examples and practices with various writing devices and use skills-based workshop to boost students' confidence in writing.

In class, students will learn how to effective sum up their story and use an appropriate writing technique or language device.

We teach students how to brainstorm and let their creativity run free to come up with simple but brilliant ideas that are tied closely to the question's theme.

We help students from Nursery 2 to kindergarten come up the curve in a systematic way — from letter forms to simple sight words, students progress to developing one-line picture descriptions and vocabulary building, gaining the mastery to form simple sentences on their own.

A range of engaging and relevant topics help students to find the words in their writing. Age-appropriate skills are taught with games, pictures and easy-to-understand practices to help students build a confidence in writing and a love for English.

Primary

Primary 1 - Primary 6

Over the 6 years in primary school, your child will be expected to produce writing of greater quality, sophistication and length.

In order to help all primary school students develop the necessary skills from Primary 1 all the way to the PSLE, we outline marking guidelines for each level of writing and use the WISE Method with every single writing exercise.

Writing = Ideas + Structure + Expression

This means that students are taught how to write pieces which

  • are relevant to the theme, question or visuals (I)
  • shows a strong ability to use language precisely (S)
  • generate a high level of interest in the reader (E)

In class, we use specially designed worksheets that help students to plan out a story on a story curve to ensure a logical flow of events. We also help students recall and apply the right vocabulary and teach specific techniques like show-not-tell or personal voice to make their compositions more engaging for readers. Each writing exercise is paired with a sample of good writing to students can learn to identify and emulate good writing.

To build strong content points that are rooted in fact and evidenced in society, our students have access to a wide range of good writing from major internal news sources like The New York Times, Time Magazine, The Economist, The Atlantic and more. Additionally, we teach students useful language devices to use the right tone in their writing through the use of imperatives, qualifiers and tricolonic forms and more.
