Prep for Oral Exams

Prep for Oral Exams

The Revised O Level English Examination Syllabus starting from 2023 will present your child with new challenges, particularly for Oral. With the introduction of the Planned Response Question, your child will be given a short time (10 minutes) to plan and deliver a response to a video clip and accompanying prompt.

This is an ideal programme for students to learn how to focus and strategise on key aspects of the oral examination. This programme offers your child intensive revision before the examinations, exposure to a wide range of oral topics, and clarity as to what the examiner is looking out for.

Your child will also have the opportunity to have one-to-one oral practices with the teacher where he/she will learn about the common errors to avoid and how to tackle challenging oral questions, just before the National oral exams in July-August.

For oral communication, students will be taught how to breakdown questions and how to link their answers to not only the visual stimulus, but also to social issues. They will also be taught how to generate appropriate vocabulary and expressions to make their answers stand out.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this programme targeted at mainstream or IP students?

The programme is meant for mainstream students sitting for the O-Level examination.

IP students will benefit from the skills taught but do note that this programme does not cover A-Level based sections.

2.  If I cannot make if for some sessions of the programme, can I still sign up? Is the content covered related?

You can still attend the session as different sections of the paper are covered over the 3 days. Should you miss any sessions, worksheets and answer keys will be provided.

3. My child already attends the Sec 4 core programme. How will this be useful?

This programme focuses on the sections of the oral paper which we feel are key to helping students score in the exam. The intensive and focused sessions will give students greater clarity of the expectations of examiners for the oral component. Students can use this opportunity to gain more targeted feedback from teachers on their oral communication skills or to even revise areas which they feel that they are not familiar with. This programme also serves as a platform for students to get extra practice.
