P2 GEP Excellence

English

For English, Primary 2 students will be trained on how to apply specific tips and strategies for a variety of General Ability questions ranging from word puzzles and analogies to homographs and anagrams. They will also learn how to analyse challenging comprehension and cloze passages, and be trained on how to eliminate options using clue-sourcing and answer precision techniques.

As vocabulary carries a high weightage in the Selection exercise, students will also get practice for tricky GEP-level MCQ questions that test their ability to differentiate between words with subtle nuances in meaning and require contextual application of vocabulary.

Components and skills covered:

  • Comprehension MCQ: specialist guidance on question analysis, close reading, clue-sourcing and answering techniques
  • Vocabulary MCQ: exposure to a comprehensive range of GEP-level vocabulary
  • Cloze Passage: contextual analysis and answer precision techniques
  • General Ability: homographs, anagrams, analogies and logic questions

Mathematics

For Mathematics, Primary 2 students will be exposed to different types of non-routine problems which include familiar concepts such as arithmetic, geometry and measurement. The General Ability questions aim to boost their higher-level logical thinking and reasoning skills.

This enrichment programme is also aimed at challenging students to achieve their full potential by tackling topics which require a strong ability to visualise diagrams. They will be taught how to analyse questions of high complexity and apply creative problem-solving methods to achieve efficiency.

Components and skills covered:

  • Arithmetic: number sense and four operations
  • Geometry: properties of polygons, shapes within shapes
  • Measurement: gaps and intervals, sets

General Ability components:

  • Number Patterns: number sequences, number puzzles, rotational/symmetrical/inverted patterns
  • Logic: relationship in pairs, deduction using logical reasoning
  • Spatial Sense: solid figures, nets

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between this course and the programme held in December 2023? If I have attended the course before last year, can I attend it again?

Certainly. We would encourage your child to join us again to gain more exposure and practice in components featured in the GEP test. The December run of the GEP Programme was aimed at giving students a first look at the type of questions they will see at the GEP Screening Test. In the run this year, students will still gain exposure to the types of questions in the test, but the questions introduced in this run will now be pitched at a higher level. For English, students will also widen their repertoire of vocabulary with our intensive exercises in this year's run to prepare them for the vocabulary section in the GEP screening test. For Maths, students will receive more practice with different problem types to prepare them for the Math and General Ability components of the GEP screening test.

2. If I cannot make it for some sessions of the programme, can I still sign up? Is the content covered related?

You can still attend the programme as each session is independent of each other. Should you miss any session, worksheets and answer keys will be provided.

3. Would you recommend my child taking it at P2?

We feel that exposure and practice are always useful for students who are keen on joining the GEP. Higher-ability students who can handle the intellectual rigour and demands of the GEP will get a taste of what the selection process is like. We also periodically expose our students to challenging GEP comprehension questions, Math Olympiad and IQ questions in our regular programmes. For new students, this will be good exposure to our TLL style and an eye-opening experience.
