“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Every child has a dream – becoming a Prime Minister, inventing something new, or perhaps competing at the Olympics. But not every child perseveres in pursuing his or her dreams.

We asked a few of our students to share their ambitions for the future.

Here’s what they said.

The Importance of Resilience

Encountering setbacks can impede children from staying true to their goals. This is especially true in the classroom, where students feel discouraged after facing challenges or disappointments such as not making the school sports team or not being able to solve tough questions. That’s why resilience is key.

It is the differentiating factor between giving up in the face of adversity and persevering in the pursuit of a dream.

When a child is resilient, he or she will have a positive attitude towards any setback, big or small. A resilient child will have the confidence to keep trying — it’s the X factor a child needs to succeed when others may give up.

Raising Resilient Children

Helping children to become resilient is about striking a careful balance between instilling the importance of perseverance and providing the right support when they feel like giving up.

When seemingly overwhelming tasks are broken down into simple steps, children are encouraged to keep going especially when they have the right knowledge and skills to apply.

We act as mentors, motivating children when they can’t see beyond a disappointing grade or a failed audition. We do this because even as we empathise with their fears and worries, we never let them give up on themselves.

Helping children to become resilient is about showing them that every mistake is a learning point, that setbacks don’t define them and that they can still achieve their dreams if they learn never to give up.

Giving Your Child the Confidence to Pursue Their Dreams

At The Learning Lab, we encourage our students to listen to their inner voice, to believe in themselves and to pursue what they want, no matter how daunting the journey might seem.

That is why we don’t just teach them what they need to excel in school, but also what they need to achieve their ambitions in life.

We teach them to persevere in the face of adversity, so they will never give up on their dreams.
