Master Free-Response Questions (FRQs)

FRQ is a type of question that requires Science students to engage with an open-ended answer format. Without multiple-choice options or fill-in-the-blank options, students will need to have a strong understanding of each topic and be able to apply specific answering skills to secure marks.

Tackle FRQs with Confidence

Free-response questions test your child’s ability to identify tested topics and to analyse the given data, charts or experiment set-ups. In short, these questions test your child’s application of scientific reasoning.

FRQs also account for 44% of the PSLE paper and up to 50% of the ‘O’ Level papers for pure Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

In our Science programmes, students will learn how to effectively use relevant keywords and information from the question to solve FRQs.

Top 3 Challenges Students Face in Answering FRQs

In class, students learn how to analyse the questions by looking at the given data and directive words such as “Identify” or “Explain”. This helps students understand very clearly how they should analyse the given information in order to craft a relevant answer.

FRQ-inability-to-use-keywords

We teach students are how to pinpoint keywords in each FRQ so they are able to provide a full answer.

For example, a question which features the keyword “variables” would suggest that it is a comparison question, while a question which contains the keyword “fulcrum” would suggest it may be a question on the topic of gears.

 
FRQ-lack-of-structure

Our curriculum specialists have developed a special ICC method that helps students structure their answers in FRQs.
