Building Impressive English Compositions

For a composition to leave an indelible mark on readers' minds, writers need to employ effective writing techniques to keep readers at the edge of their seat. In our English programmes, our structured approach to characterisation and building suspense in a story's climax helps young writers to bring their story to life.

TLL’s 6-Step Structured Writing Approach

We introduce students to good writing, teach them specific writing techniques and help them to understand the importance of characterisation, tone and imagery.

01

Story Curve

Our teachers break down the basics of a story curve to train students in generating ideas and structuring the flow of the story.

02

Analysing the Theme

In lessons, our students are taught how to examine the theme in order to develop a relevant, engaging and well-structured essay.

03

5Ws 1H

Our teachers encourage students to use the 5Ws 1H (who, what, when, where, why and how) technique for setting a vivid scene in the introduction.

04

5 Senses Technique

Our teachers will direct students on using the 5-senses description technique (see, hear, taste, smell, touch) to enhance the description of a scene.

05

Writing a Climax

In lessons, our teachers will demonstrate how a good climax can be expressed by detailing the characters’ successes or failures in handling the complication that arose.

06

Concluding the Story

Our teachers will guide students in brainstorming possible outcomes, feelings and lessons learnt to wrap up their story nicely.
