What Can You Expect in Secondary School?

Hear from our secondary school teachers as they share their experiences and insights on what the transition to secondary school entails.

Breaking Down the Secondary 1 Challenges

A New Learning Environment

With the increase in school hours, it is important for your child to adapt and become comfortable in their new environment as this has a positive impact on learning, grades and their overall mental well-being.

Increased Learning Pressure

As your child attempts to manage the increased pressure from the additional workload and longer school hours, they may end up falling behind in subjects they may be weaker in.

Increased Freedom and Responsibilities

Your child will be expected to be more independent when completing their schoolwork and when managing research projects, while they learn how to commute to school and back, and attend co-curricular activities.

Topics of Higher Complexity

On top of topics of higher complexity being introduced in English, Maths, Science and Mother Tongue, your child will have to get a grasp of new subjects such as History, D&T, F&N, Geography, Literature, History, and various new ways of learning in the classroom.

Your Child's
Secondary School
Journey

Secondary  2  |  The Launch Pad

By now, your child should have a better sense of what the secondary school journey entails and in Sec 2, it is integral for your child to have:

  • a strong foundation in the wide array of subjects from Sec 1.
  • the ability to make informed decisions and the foresight to plan ahead when it comes to picking the subjects they wish to take at the upper secondary level at the end of Sec 2, that will serve as subject prerequisites in their future academic journey.
  • the confidence to excel in their examinations to gain leverage in the streaming exercise that will determine their Secondary 3 subject combination and the subjects they will sit for in the O-Level.

Secondary  1  |  The Transition

Your child’s foray into secondary school begins with:

  • honing critical thinking skills to tackle topics of a higher degree of complexity in English, Maths, Science and Mother Tongue.
  • establishing a rock-solid foundation for an influx of new subjects — e.g. Literature, Geography, History, Art, Design & Technology, Food & Nutrition.
  • adapting to a new social learning environment — group discussions, debates and project work.
  • developing values and competencies in the CCA of their choice.

Secondary  4  |  Lift-Off

The final stretch of the secondary school journey marks an important year filled with challenges in the lead up to the O-Level that can be conquered through:

  • evaluating common mistakes and working on eliminating them.
  • striving for mastery in every topic and component across all subjects.
  • drawing up a study and revision plan to ensure maximum time management and adequate time allocation for each subject.
  • displaying utmost attention in consolidating and revising 4 years’ worth of academic knowledge.
  • refining the ability of applying the extensive scope of knowledge in different situations or contexts.
  • utilising critical thinking and metacognitive skills in higher-level thinking questions that test real-world application and awareness of current affairs.

  • identify and target areas of improvement in topics that they are weaker in, to raise subject mastery.
  • practise time management skills to boost productivity in studying, revising, taking part in competitions and taking up leadership roles in their CCA.
