Students will learn basic grammar rules and thematic vocabulary that will help them to build a strong foundation in the language. These include:

Speaking
Students will develop their own personal opinions and gain confidence in public speaking.
Reading and writing
Students will learn to identify main ideas and key details of texts, as well as learn answering techniques.

Contextualised Learning
Students will be introduced to a wide variety of themes that will help them to contextualise their learning in the real world and raise their social awareness. Key themes include:

• Students will master foundational concepts in Number Sense, Four operations, Ordinal Numbers, Money, Length, Time, 2D Shapes, Patterns and Picture Graphs.
• Students will solve word problems on Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Ordinal Numbers and Money.

Skills and Techniques
• Students will present word problems pictorially by drawing part-whole and comparison models.
• Students will apply heuristics including Make A List, Find A Pattern and Restate the Problem in problem solving.
• Students will use informal units of measurement to order object based on length and ordinal position.
• Students will develop critical thinking skills through topical challenging problems and Math Olympiad handouts.

Applied Learning
• Students will use manipulatives such as counting cubes and pan balances to carry out performance tasks in class.
• Students will revise concepts through role-play, classroom games and takeaways.
• Students will appreciate the real-life application of Math through arts, crafts and presentations such as presenting the designed architecture based on the concept of length.

The Primary 1 Chinese programme will help your child manage formal components of Chinese language study. In addition to enhancing his or her reading, writing and speaking skills, there are also component-based skills to help your child gain confidence in his or her learning of Chinese.
