Unearthing Mother Nature

The Learning Lab is delighted to collaborate with Da Vinci Group to present Unearthing Mother Nature — a NeuroEd® programme.

Through clay and hand-building, children will understand the shapes, sizes and textures of replicating fossils and ancient pottery. This will extend into learning about and appreciating the arduous job requirements of miners, archaeologists and palaeontologists as discoverers, teachers and protectors of history. Children will explore these roles through process drama - a method of teaching and learning drama where both the participant and facilitator are working in and out of role.

With an ever-growing consciousness of our environment and man-made activities that affect natural processes, this programme seeks to have children discover the secrets Mother Nature holds. By “digging” into the Earth for various intents and purposes, our children will learn about ancient civilizations, dinosaur fossils, gemstones and minerals!

Each child will create 1 functional kiln-fired ceramic product, and 1 air-dry clay creation (using the KlayKit) over the 3-day workshop. Kiln-fired creation will be fired in a state-of-the-art modern kiln and returned 4 weeks from the date of programme.

NeuroTheatre®

NeuroTheatre® is a curriculum that is developed based on process drama, a method of teaching and learning drama where both the participant and facilitator are working in and out of role. Various concepts are introduced to participants through carefully crafted drama scenarios, enabling them to proactively challenge their thinking and express challenging concepts.

Introducing different content through process drama is an effective way for children to create emotional links towards learning. This allows for an increase in self-confidence, self-awareness and self-esteem in articulating their understanding, challenges their current thought processes and thinking habits, cultivates artistic expression and emphasizes fun while learning.

NeuroCeramics®
NeuroCeramics® uses pottery as a platform to engage participants. Creating pottery is a hands-on experience that engages emotions and stimulates creative expression. The curriculum is developed to expose participants to multiple concepts and to enhance their tactile cognition. The ceramic products created serve as trigger points for participants to remember the concepts introduced.

As research has shown, when we play with clay, a strong touch-to-brain activity occurs, creating new neural pathways in our brain. When such an experience is paired with learning or acquiring new concepts, students absorb and retain a concept better.
